Elevate literacy in upcoming virtual learning opportunity

Educators across the state are invited to join an exciting virtual learning opportunity focused on literacy. The Statewide Literacy Professional Learning Sessions are scheduled for September 18 and will feature statewide literacy updates and resources that support continued implementation of the 2024 Iowa Academic Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy.

The sessions will highlight several priority topics, including implementation and support of high-quality instructional materials, evidence-based practices for English learners, adolescent literacy and family engagement strategies to improve literacy outcomes.

Participants can choose to attend one or all of the planned virtual learning sessions, listed below:

  • Session 1 – 9-10:30 a.m.
    Iowa Department of Education Literacy Updates, Iowa Department of Education’s Bureau of Academics and Learner Supports Literacy Team

    High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM): Leading and Supporting Implementation, 2026 Iowa Teacher of the Year Stephanie Pritts

  • Session 2 – 10:45-11:45 a.m. 
    Evidence-Based Practices for English Learners, Iowa Department of Education’s ESEA Programs
  • Session 3 – 1-2 p.m.
    Research-Based Approaches to Morphology Instruction Grounded in the Science of Reading, Iowa Reading Research Center
  • Session 4 – 2:15-3:15 p.m.
    Sparking Early Literacy: Helping Caregivers and Educators Support the Development of Code-Focused Literacy Skills, Iowa Reading Research Center

There is no cost to attend this virtual event. Registration is now open through Sept. 17 at 3 p.m.
