Resources for Veterans Day classroom activities
For Veterans Day on Nov. 11, the nation will join together in recognizing the contributions, sacrifices and impact of veterans and present United States service members. Iowa educators can take part in this annual observance by incorporating classroom activities and thoughtful discussions that highlight American veterans and their pivotal roles in ensuring our country’s freedom.
To assist educators with planning lessons and activities focused on veterans during the week of Nov. 9, the U.S Department of Veterans Affair and the Veterans Day National Committee have issued the 2026 Veterans Day Teacher’s Resource Guide. The guide offers classroom-ready lessons, accurate history, age-appropriate activities, scholarships and community engagement ideas that support meaningful Veterans Day instruction.
Veterans Day provides another opportunity to connect classroom learning with America’s 250th anniversary, encouraging students to reflect on our nation’s rich history, the contributions of those who have served and what America means to them, personally. Over the past year, Iowa’s America 250 celebration has connected to the service of veterans and their indelible impact through several initiatives, such as the Iowa Veterans Research Project, Iowa America 250 Student Contest and America 250 Webinar Series.
Additional state and national resources are listed below to assist educators with leading classroom discussions that honor and celebrate the service of all United States veterans, including close to 18 million veterans living today.
